I’m have not exactly been flush with extra cash during the past five years so I’ve found that by using my ingenuity I’ve managed to create interesting things for the garden by using other peoples rubbish and upcycling these items into something new. Because you use you initiative it’s better than actually buying something brand new and better for the environment too.
Upcycling is the ‘process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.’ In today’s world, stuff is wasted and thrown away, mostly by people who have more than enough stuff.
A lot of people work hard to live a green and sustainable life. If you are trying to be as green and eco-friendly as you can, it is important you make yourself aware of the benefits of upcycling. While deciding to reduce, reuse and recycle is good and should be done whenever possible, upcycling lets people take old or “used” items and turn them into a higher quality product (or one in which you may find a better use).
With summer drawing to a close its an ideal time to think of items you have about and think what you have lying about and think of alternative uses for these things. You’ve probably finished your garden displays and maybe there are a few things you are ready to donate, give away or toss, rather than use again. Before you do get rid of anything, take another look and see what you can learn about upcycling and possibly give yourself a few ideas on what to create from things that have use for in their original state.
My latest examples are planters from an old boiler flue cage and a slow cooker and a wooden planter cum raised bed from an old broken wooden crate.
